Relying on SBF’s strengths to achieve growth as a global company

Representing Shareholder Perspectives as an Independent Director
Having spent 30 years working in listed foreign companies, I believe that one of the most important characteristics of these companies is their emphasis on shareholder perspectives. For example, when they plan new products or propose new projects, they always explain the returns that can be expected as a result of investment in these initiatives. Success also depends on a company’s ability to convince its shareholders that its decisions are appropriate. Repetitions of this experience naturally make employees more aware of shareholder perspectives.
As an outside director of SBF, I see myself as a representative of ordinary shareholders. From that perspective, I am continually thinking about how SBF can achieve sustainable growth and improve its corporate value. In my opinion, the role of an outside director is to provide external perspectives while understanding the internal perspective and raise issues that may be difficult for those within the company to speak about. Fortunately, the meetings of the SBF Board of Directors are characterized by a mood of openness. I am grateful for an environment in which I can speak my mind.

Global Experience on the Frontline of Business
I believe that I can best contribute through my understanding of the business principles of foreign companies, which I have developed through my experience with such companies. During my 17 years with a leading global FMCG company, I was involved in the start-up of global operations at corporate headquarters and gained direct experience of corporate thinking and the way in which initiatives are accepted in various regions and countries.
Through this work, I became keenly aware of how difficult it is to implement one-way corporate strategies in local markets. In that sense, I am very impressed by SBF’s concept of local autonomy, as explained by President Kogo. By giving autonomy to each region, SBF achieves growth based on an understanding of local consumers and customers. I believe that the central corporate organization should be an enabler. Its role should be to facilitate growth by providing support.

Ensuring the Future Growth of SBF
As companies grow and their activities become more global, it can become more difficult for employees to understand the character of their companies. The corporate philosophy becomes extremely important when employees start to wonder about the purpose of their work. SBF’s Mizu To Ikiru philosophy is excellent in my opinion. It consists of concepts that anyone can support, and they are expressed in clear and simple language. Also important is the corporate culture. Culture is like the air in a company, and the air in SBF is imbued with the bold, adventurous spirit of Yatte Minahare. When I attend board meetings, I sense the Yatte Minahare spirit in everyone there. I believe that the people who inherit this corporate culture are SBF’s most important assets. SBF’s brands are also assets. I want to help SBF to strengthen its brands and services in each region and country. I also want to help it build its global corporate brand, strengthen its employer branding, and improve its shareholder value.

As a member of Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam Beverage (SPVB) Corporate Affairs Department, I think I am lucky staff, who have had many opportunities to join and contribute to the society via our CSR activities. Among our CSR activities, Mizuiku program is one of the most outstanding program, which SPVB has been carrying out in Vietnam for 4 years. The program is to help Vietnamese primary school students raising their awareness on water and environment protection. The program follows our Promise to the society, Mizu To Ikiru. The program not only teaches the students about the value of water resource, respect Mother Nature but also gives them chance to explore life and themselves via many practical meaningful activities. I am proud of being the member of SPVB to bring the good values to life and make the living stardard getting better via our CSR activites. Life and work will bring us a lot of challenge surely. However I beleive that with our core values, and the good things/programs we have being done, the company and myself will overcome the challenges and continue to achieve great sucess in the future.

I joined the Corporate Affairs Department of Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam Beverage (SPVB) a year ago. The CSR programs carried out by the Company and its meaningful impact on society overwhelmed me, especially the “Mizuiku – I love clean water”. As many of you may have heard of, environment pollution is a serious issue in Vietnam with many people islandic & mountainous areas suffering from one of the most basic needs of living – clean water. Some provinces suffered from the severe draught every year, while others have their water sources affected with alum. Through the Mizuiku program (which is widely known in Vietnam as “Mizuiku – I love clean water”) has helped to educate thousands of primary students on clean water protection awareness, provide safe & drinkable water for the local residents through water filtration systems and construct toilet upgradations for primary schools nationwide. I feel very proud to be a part of this program and I wish that the message on clean water protection would be spread further and wider every year. Supporting the local community is a fundamental part of our business and that is how we live up to the “Mizu To Ikiru” promise every day at SPVB.

I am the “Mizuiku – I love clean water” Ambassador and am proud of it. I had several opportunities to be a real teacher and taught children the importance of clean water, how to use and preserve water via the easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember teaching methods such as doing water filtration experiment, watching cartoon, drawing your river. Thanks to this program, more and more Vietnamese students are fully aware that they need to protect environment and water when they are still very young. In one-hour course, my colleagues, especially my spouse (also SPVB’s staff) and I cooperated closely to run the class effectively and make sure that children can concentrate and remember lessons. Even though we were very exhausted, we were very happy for contributing a small effort to the education for young generation And I just realize I can stand in front of many children to teach and play with them which I never imagined I could not fulfill the role of teacher.

I have embraced the value of Mizu To Ikiru promise since I took the position of Mizuiku Executive at Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam Beverage (SPVB). Known as “Mizuiku – I love clean wate” in Vietnam, the program has been widely implemented in more than 40 primary schools, teaching about water protection and providing clean water to nearly 14,500 students during the past four years. Not only I found my work rewarding but also exciting with challenging since the program is scaling up across Vietnam. Firstly, I contribute to increase awareness and promote actions of Vietnamese young generations to protect and preserve water resource and the environment. Also, it enhances Suntory and SPVB corporate branding as a good corporate citizen in water and environmental protection. Secondly, because of the program’s rapid development, it is crucial to deliver the best possible quality of execution and sustain the impacts of the program. By bearing in mind the Mizu To Ikiru promise, I keep myself motivated every day to fulfill my job accountabilities and achieve the big goal of “Mizuiku – I love clean water” program.

MORE MATURE with Mizu To Ikiru JOURNEY
Firstly, just sharing about our recent achievement related to cost guarantee for conveyor lubricant with huge cost reduction. However, looking back, I realized we gained more than cost savings because we would consume less chemical, meaning less water for cleaning and less waste to environment.
Following that, I understand why cost savings is our key focus as it is not only benefit, but indirect positive impact to environment & society. In Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam Beverage (SPVB), we are always encouraged for new initiatives and challenges to do that.
Furthermore, Mizu To Ikirupromise stretches outside work.
Currently, I am proudly Mizuiku ambassador in SPVB. This occasionally came to me when I consider it similar to volunteer activities I ever joined.
However exceeding a CSR activity, Mizuiku brings me the opportunity to improve myself and understand about Mizu To Ikiru spirit.
After well trained, I help children understand about the importance of water, the way to conserve and recycle water. For a volunteer, it is an exciting experience and for society, it is all about values of environment protection. Hereafter, small values will form endlessly from people to people, from adults to children and at the end, becomes bigger.
You see, Mizu To Ikiru promise is not very flashy. It’s simply commitment in daily job or contribution to create values for society. Get together on this journey, we gain and our society gains more.

Clean water is always one of the most important things for people and all creature on the earth. But nowadays, clean water source is exhausted rapidly. Spreading the message of saving clean water and environmental protection to people, especially education for children, becomes an important mission. Therefore, I have participated in “Mizuiku – I love clean water” since 2017 as a Mizuiku ambassador. Along with the other Mizuiku ambassadors and the organizers, we taught primary school pupils in Hanoi and Bac Ninh province by simple lessons but in a diffirent and more interesting way, such as reading poems; showing pictures, photos about water and the environment; interesting team-building activities; "My country’s river" painting activity; doing "Water filter" experiment. We all had a good memorable memories together. After one year, I realized that the pupils where we held the classes understood more about the importance of clean water, knew how to use water more effective and how to live in harmony with water and nature as the meaning of “Mizu To Ikiru” - embrace water and nature. Mizuiku has brought a strong message to the local community about environmental protection and it has received a lot of attention and affection of Vietnamese people. In the future, I will continue to participate in Mizuiku and also other programs to spread our promise more widely to people in the society.
